How to prepare for your newborn studio session in Plymouth

This is something I am asked ALL the time so I thought that it was about time that I wrote a blog post specifically aimed to help you best prepare for your newborn studio session in Plymouth!

Parents often ask me how we achieve such sleepy curled-up poses during our baby photography sessions in Plymouth. Having had LOTS of babies visit me in the studio (from 4 days old up to 81 days old!) I honestly still believe it is all in the planning ahead of your newborn session.

So how can YOU prepare for your newborn studio session in Plymouth?

Feed your baby when you arrive to the Plymouth studio

Try to feed your baby 3 hours before your session so that when they arrive at the studio they are getting ready for the next feed. Babies tend to want to sleep after a big feed (dont we all?!) so it is great if they are ready for a feed when they arrive at the studio in Plymouth. This helps makes their baby photography session in Plymouth a sleepy experience!

Keep your baby awake before the newborn session

Try to keep your baby awake for at least an hour before your session. I know this is easier said than done though!! Your baby uses so much energy as they are growing SO much in those first few weeks. Simple stimulation before the session will help them become very sleepy.

Dress your baby in a simple outfit

Newborn outfits are SO cute right?! But for your session it would be really helpful if you could dress your baby in a really simple baby grow that is easy to remove. This means that when we remove their clothes during the session that they won’t be too disturbed. It also avoids marks on the skin that often clothing can leave.

If you have a special outfit you would like to have your baby dressed in for their baby photos in Plymouth please let me know when we are planning your session so I allow time for it in your studio session.

Bring a dummy to your Plymouth studio session

Does your baby use a dummy? Then please bring it to the session! Babies often like to suck on something as a form of comfort. Being in a studio environment can be a little daunting so having a creature comfort to hand helps your baby feel safe and comfortable. I do have Nuk Medic Pro individually packed sterilised dummies in the studio in Plymouth so should you decide during your session that you would like to try using a dummy I have plenty on hand.

Wear layers!

I keep the studio very toasty (some use the word hot!) to keep your baby nice and warm. For parents I suggest wearing layers. I can’t predict what the temperature will be outside on the day of your session (who can ever predict what the weather will be doing in Plymouth?!) but I promise you it will feel chilly when you leave the studio at the end!!

Bring lots of nappies and formula

If you are formula feeding please bring more formula with you than you will need. As it is so warm your baby may want to drink more and I don’t want you to run out. If your baby is drinking lots they might also use lots of nappies! I have Pampers and Aldi Mamia nappies in the studio should you run out. I provide chilled water for parents.

I know there was so much information to take in there ahead of your newborn photos in Plymouth! I now send out a crib sheet ahead of your session with all my hints and tips included.

I do hope that this blog post has helped give some guidance to prepare for your newborn studio session in Plymouth.

I do appreciate that some babies just don’t like to sleep when they arrive so instead we get some lovely awake shots of them! Check out my awake newborn blog here!
