5 things to consider when choosing a Plymouth baby photographer

When choosing a Plymouth baby photographer what are you supposed to look for? There is such a big market now of local Plymouth photographers so I thought it might be helpful if I gave a little advice that I have picked up on my journey as a photographer.

Baby Safety when choosing a Plymouth baby photographer

Baby safety is THE MOST important thing to consider when booking a Plymouth newbornphotographer. You will have already researched the best car seat, the best pushchair and the best cot for your baby. So why not also put the same level of research into your baby photographer?

Just because someone has listed themselves as a photographer does not mean that they know how to handle a baby or how to safely pose them. You want to not only love your gorgeous baby photos but also love the SAFE experience that you and your baby had in the studio.

Have you read my blog on newborn safety during a Plymouth studio session? I have shared a few behind the scenes shots to show you how I composite images together to keep your baby safe at all times.

And with baby safety in mind please make sure that your photographer has up to date studio insurance. My insurance is through a company called Policy Bee. Please get in touch if you would like further details on my insurance.

Style of Plymouth newborn photographer

There are SO many amazing local Plymouth photographers. You really are spoilt for choice when choosing a Plymouth baby photographer. You will notice that every photographer has their own unique style. Photography is art and it is a great way to add beautiful family portraits to the walls in your home.

Choose your photographer based on the style you love. Your baby will grow up so quickly so you really want to be in love with your baby photos.

If you are looking for a whimsical studio session with themes and colours to suit you and your family I would be honoured if you would consider me as your baby photographer. I love planning bespoke studio sessions that have family portraits included within the session. Check out my blog for more examples of my work!

Budget for the newborn session

The cost of baby sessions can vary greatly. After you have considered both newborn safety and style, budget is the next most important thing to consider.

A local Plymouth photographer running a legal business will need to make sure their overheads (training, insurance and other business expenses) are covered so expect them to be a little bit more expensive.

For full pricing details please do have a little look at my newborn packages. I charge a deposit to secure your studio photo session in the diary. After your baby photo session this is then used as credit towards a package.

Along with budget you need to consider where the photographer is based when choosing a Plymouth baby photographer. Are they local to you? Will it be easy to get to their studio with a brand new baby? My cosy home studio is based in Plymouth, PL4.

You also need to consider how long the newborn session will be. Is your photographer allowing enough time for your baby to have regular feeds as well as having beautiful photos?

All of my studio sessions are between 2-4 hours. Some babies sleep really well and are quick but others need a little more time for feeds. I always make sure that we have plenty of time to capture gorgeous baby photos. Check out my blog on how to prepare for your studio session for more information.

Timing of the baby studio session

Babies grow up SO fast! I often get asked how early you can come to the studio for a session once baby has arrived. I always say the earlier the better!

Babies are normally best photographed before they are 21 days old. They are still so small and curly at this age. I keep the studio nice and warm and have white noise playing so that they have a perfectly snuggly environment to sleep in.

I like to plan the session within the first 2 weeks as Dad’s paternity leave often runs out after this point. I like Dad’s to be at the session, if they can be, so that we can get some gorgeous family portraits too.

If your baby has had some time in hospital after being born I always try to get them in the studio within 7 days of them being sent home. I always stay in touch once your baby has arrived so we can best plan a date around you.

Sometime life doesn’t go to plan so please don’t worry if your baby is older than 21 days. I have had some amazing studio sessions with older babies. Check out 12 week old Isabella here!

Availability and the importance of booking early

Popular photographers often get booked up months in advance. I take bookings from the 12 week scan to ensure that I have space in the diary for you.

Babies often don’t arrive when planned so I take a limited amount of baby studio bookings in Plymouth a month to ensure that I can fit everyone in. This does sometime mean that I can take a last minute booking if I have lots of late babies but, to avoid disappointment, I ask that you book early. This also gives us plenty of time to plan a really special bespoke studio session!

Wow – SO much to take in! I hope that my blog post can help you a little when you are choosing a Plymouth baby photographer.
